RAINHAM MARSHES

Year 5 enjoyed a wonderful day at Rainham Marshes on Thursday. Over to 5W to explain some of the fantastic activities we experienced.

 Water cycle race

In the water cycle race we had to get a cup of water from a bucket and take it to the other bucket and say evaporation. Once we got all the water to the other side we had to come back. On the way back we had to say precipitation. After we took a look at the water in both buckets in my group we got roughly the same amount of water. It took team work to get both sides.

 Ropey River
We had an activity called ropey river. What we had to do is make our own river with rope, string and wool then put words on our river these are the words: tributary, mouth and source .Then we had to name our river my group called it River Sage then we had to tell the rest of our classmates about our rivers.

 Field sketch
Year 5 went to a place called Rainham Marshes. We had 4 field teachers. We done lots of activities and one of them was Field Sketching . We learnt that the Thames River flows away from the source and away from London. We had to draw what we could see like the power station, QE2 bridge and most of all the features of the river.
 Blotic  index

We had to spit up into 4’s or 5’s groups in order to do the Blotic index. Basically we have to lie on our tummies and do a type of dipping called Pond dipping and do a figure  of 8 ,so you can catch a fish or a river creature . After we had to count all of the creatures altogether and work out  the score of it . And the total was 4.3. This told us that the river was fairly clean but there was some pollution.

                Build a river
What we had to do is we had to bild the river Thames. We had to use team –work, when we finished we had to find out were we have to put the tributary, confluence, source and mouth and why. When we were fixing it,at the beginning it was hard but some one found out that there were numbers at the back of the carpet tiles and that was how we finished it

Many thanks to Brona and all the field teachers at Rainham Marshes, to the staff and helpers from Henry Green and, most importantly, all the well-behaved children for making it such a successful trip.
